As we celebrate this day off, this time of solitude; let us not forget the great men and women, black, white, yellow and brown who have come before us that fought and risked their lives for the rights many of a take for granted each day. If it wasn't for their sacrifice freedom would only be a word or a dream outside of reality. Dr. King, with the help of the Lord Jesus, made this dream become closer to a real possibility.
Growing up as a child, my parents taught me about MLK's triumphs and what it meant to us today. As a woman of color, I realize just how monumental this Civil rights leader's deeds were and the strength he exuded not only in his words but in his actions. Dr. King taught me I could have a voice, that I could overcome, that I could find my strength in acts of love and kindness and most importantly, that I could dream. And his dream is what helped make me and so many other peoples dreams possible and thus strive to achieve them.
With all the monumental changes in America and throughout the world we can safely say that Dr. King's dream has truly reached its pinnacle.
Here are the lyrics from a song I sang in kindergarten that I remember to this day, I hope you take in its meaning-that is so simple yet so true:
There was a man
A gentle man
Who gave up his life for his land
This man had a dream
To touch every heart
For he knew that we'd understand
This man had a dream
Who gave up his life for his land
This man had a dream
To touch every heart
For he knew that we'd understand
This man had a dream
That someday for all
The bells of freedom would ring
His dream would become reality
For his name is Martin Luther King...
The bells of freedom would ring
His dream would become reality
For his name is Martin Luther King...
